Below are the activities that we have designed to increase family involvement and support our students’ learning.
Creating the Characters – The Colonists (episode 2) This activity is designed so you can help your child learn more about their extended families. Throughout the unit they will be working in families that will consist of aunts, cousins, grandparents, in-laws, etc. and therefore it is important that the students understand these relationships prior to creating their characters. This activity will ask each student to complete their own family tree and describe how at least three of the family members got their names. The more information you can provide them about their family and the importance of how they each connect with their extended families, the better!
Building Context – Life and Work in Colonial Boston (episode 3) This activity is designed so you can help your child research daily life in colonial Boston. Their “family” in colonial Boston will work together to decide on topics that each person will research. Each student will begin their research in class, as time permits, but will be asked to continue their research at home with their families’ assistance. This worksheet will help guide this process with your child.
Synthesis of Students’ Learning (conclusion) The third family activity is designed so you can help your child research a current event where normal people are faced with injustices. Your child will be asked to summarize the conflict, evaluate how people are responding, and relate this event to the current Storypath curriculum. The following day in class they will be asked to write a paragraph offering suggestions for how those facing the conflict can make a difference and stand up for what they believe is right.
